PD

I'm not so doctrinaire on the issue of government in media. On the matter of objectivity, the VOA has had an overall better reputation than RFE/RL. The former is directly affiliated with the US government, whereas the latter isn't, while depending on large government funding.

In post-Soviet Russia, the extreme choices seem have been a given oligarch, with an exe to grind, or government involved venues. Some of the latter aren't worse than the former.

How to combat an ignorantly slanted bias that gets better funding over other views? This is where some earnest government intervention can play a role.

How well can Americans en masse spot "phony news?" Many of them seem to be subconsciously duped in a number of instances. This has to do with a better mass media propaganda imagery of not appearing so biased, while having slanted takes on some issues.

Organizations like FAIR and the Media Education Foundation make some valid points.

At the more high profile of venues that permit some dissent, there're other valid sources being muted out of the existing status quo. Cronyism and a limited tolerance for some otherwise valid commentary remain evident.

The above article makes some cogent points.

However, when was the last time that The Moscow Times ran substantive criticism of the English language mass media coverage of the former Communist bloc? Who is writing hard hitting criticism of this skewed coverage and where's such commentary typically getting placed?

The "censorship" term is often times used in an overly subjective way. This is exhibited by the phony blowhards who talk the talk in private, while doing something contrary in a more public setting for personal advancement sake.

Welcome!

  • Welcome to "Other Points of View" on Russia. We believe there is need in the public forum for a venue which offers opinions and facts that at times may differ from the prevailing view in western media.

Our point of view is not political, is not theoretical, and is not academic. It comes from decades of working at the grassroots of Soviet and post-Soviet society and being avid watchers of Russian politics, economics, history, societal conditioning and current mindsets. Please review our history in order to better understand our perspective on Russia today.

This blog has a companion program, the Russia Media Watch (RMW), which analyzes select pieces of western media for accuracy or inaccuracy of content based on 17 objective criteria. Analyses are then sent to the journalist, the publication and to a wide list of American Congress members, think tanks, business and civic leaders throughout the country.
