Whether
because of political correctness, or unconscious Russophobia, the U.S.
mainstream media, in this case The
New York Times, continues to analyze only one side of the situation
in Russia’s North Caucasus. New York Times’ correspondent Ellen Barry, is careful
to avoid all but cursory mention of the Islamic jihadists, who kill hundreds
and wound many hundreds more in Russia every year. The U.S. mainstream press has yet to produce one article
focused on the activity, beliefs, and goals of the ‘Caucasus Emirate’
jihadists. One positive in this article is that, contrary to usual practice, an
element of positive change initiated by the Russians (and their local allies)
is entertained – along with the acknowledgement that President Dmitry Medvedev
has taken a different approach from that of former president Vladimir Putin.
